Overview

A combination of fintech and finance, this course will mix it up, according to student experience and Capstone projects. This course will focus on fundamentals of banking and financial services, along with new fintech business models, and practical lessons on running a fintech company. There will be emphasis on current news in the industry, with students encouraged to read and bring in questions on current affairs.

Prerequisites

Interest in banking, fintech, and finance.

Methodology

Interactive lectures using case studies, group projects and presentations. Potential guest lectures by relevant industry professionals. Reading selected articles in the news, and videos.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
20% - Group project - Study an EU regulation or directive, context, who is involved, summarize main points, implications (Written and verbal presentation)
20% - Individual Project - Setting up a fintech company, compliance, and corporate governance (Written and verbal presentation)
20% - Class participation and homework
40% - Group Project - Deep dive into a fintech. Describe what the fintech does, how it makes money, competition, etc., (Written and verbal presentation)

Lan-Ling brings a diverse skill set and breadth to help financial institutions tackle strategy, innovation and transformation. With over 20 years experience in the finance industry, Lan-Ling’s banking expertise and her hands-on experience as an entrepreneur allows her to understand the practical issues that companies face while having insight into the broad trends facing the financial industry. At PA Consulting Group, Lan-Ling provides leadership to cross-functional, high performing teams to solve hard problems using innovative thinking and breakthrough technologies. She helps clients to leverage their strengths to build and implement future strategy as well as to investigate and design new value propositions and financial products by re-imagining financial services using technology. Her clients have included European banks and fintechs, financial regulators, multi-national payment providers, and capital market infrastructure players.

Before joining PA, Lan-Ling was Head of Operations for the Stockholm Fintech Hub where she helped fintechs with strategy, partnerships, and regulatory issues. Lan-Ling was an investor and advisor to a European mobile payments company, where she dealt in regulatory issues, product and marketing. She was on the founding team of the first pan-European internet mortgage lender, dealing with financing, regulatory, underwriting, and product development. Lan-Ling started her career in structured finance, helping companies, banks, governments to raise debt capital.
