Overview

This is a course around financial analysis and decision making mainly from the point of view of the Partner of a venture firm. We cover incentives and motivations of all the participants (VCs, Founders, Lawyers, Employees, Angels, etc) from early to late stages of company development.

We will discuss the current VC ecosystem and its most recent developments. We will use cases to develop a practical understanding of concepts and tools related to valuation, financial modeling and management of VC investments. The course will use recent investment cases in the biotech and tech sectors, while we will also look at VC Funds fundraising and structuring.

Learning highlights

  • Participants will be able to navigate the fundraising process for the VC company. Students will get understanding of Term Sheets, valuation metrics and tools available to Founders and Investors.
  • We will analyse which source of funds are appropriate for each stage and type of business. Structuring of incentives and contracts will be discussed. Different exit strategies will be covered.
  • The objective is to understand the VC framework and key focus issues, to know where to look for the answers and to start developing your personal network.

Methodology

Course will be taught as a combination of lectures, cases and classroom discussions. Two guest speakers will be invited to discuss recent notable investments in Biotech and Prop-tech sectors. Participation in the discussions is key.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
40% - The basis of attendance and active participation
20% - Daily mini - quiz
40% - Final case

Vladimir Guber is a Managing Director in the London office of ICBC Standard Bank Ltd. He leads private credit origination and structuring. ICBCS helps clients to finance and grow their businesses, drive innovation and transform industries

Previously, Vladimir was Executive Director at Goldman Sachs, working in NY and London, where he successfully built and managed businesses across FICC. He started his career in 2007 at Merrill Lynch NY, in structured credit.
