Overview

Today, one of the most demanded skills in communication is motion design. Why, because of the simple fact that we have screens everywhere and we must take advantage of motion to further express ideas and concepts.

This course will help you learn how to give meaning to motion, using a combination of skills and techniques adapted from other industries. After the course, you'll have a better notion on how to plan and design movement with intention.

Prerequisites

This class is designed to exercise and understand creativity in order to generate solid work. Sketching is the most underrated skill, so students are expected to get a blank Moleskine style sketch book and a black ink pen to sketch everyday.

Students will learn the basics of how to put an animated sequence together in Adobe Premiere or After Effects. It takes time and practice to get the most out of them, so students are encouraged to learn the software on their own time. I’ll provide guidance on what to learn depending on each student's skill set and assignments.

Students should have After Effects installed and make sure their computers have at least 10GB of free space.

Methodology

Projects may vary depending on students skill level.

Three weekly projects (planning, sketching, animatic editing and post). Project 1: Experimental - Testing techniques. Project 2: Brading animation - Logo motion identity. Project 3: Titles animation - Applied motion identity to titles.

Small group and class project critiques.

Work in progress check-ins with some in-class studio time.

Live demos and lectures based on real world projects.

General Class Structure 30-45 mins lecture. 15-20 mins break. After Effects/Premiere/Audition Demo. Group check-ins and critiques. In-class work time. After class work sessions + questions/ feedback.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
30% - Project 1
30% - Project 2
30% - Project 3
10% - Participation
Students will be graded on three weekly projects. 1.Not only graded on the final animations but also effort, participation, and work in progress. 2.Turning each assignment on time before the deadlines (sketches, designs, rough cuts, motion tests, and final renders). 3. Following the delivery spec requirements like file type and sizes (.mp4 .gif .mov) 4.Projects will overlap on weekends. Students would be finishing one project while getting concepts started on the next one. 5.Be in class on time
