Overview

Probability theory plays a significant role in science, finance and industry. Whenever there is a non-deterministic experiment, one would like to describe possible outcomes and to measure their likelihoods (in other words, to find their probabilities). During this course, we will give an elementary outline of probability with examples and applications.

We will start by explaining relevant counting tools and strategies, then we will introduce probability and give useful properties.

Learning highlights

  • The objective of the course is to provide a vivid introduction to combinatorics and probability theory by uncovering their basic notions and techniques.

Methodology

Each three-hour class is a mixture of a lecture, where the new material is presented, and a practical section, where problems related to the topic of the day are solved and discussed.

In order to further improve understanding of the taught material, ungraded tests and quizzes will be given regularly. Besides, five graded homeworks will be assigned that will contribute to the final grade for the course.

There will be two interim exams at the end of the first two weeks, followed by the final exam on the final day of the course.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
25% - Graded assignments (5 assignments)
25% - Interim Exam - 1 (Monday, March 22)
25% - Interim Exam - 2 (Monday, March 29)
25% - Final exam (Friday, April 2)
