Overview

During this highly interactive course, students will present work they have done on the Capstone Project over the past year to an experienced VC investor. We expect students to have a prototype of the startup and a decent investor presentation ready by the launch date of the course. At the very least the project/idea should be sales-validated via customer interviews/discovery calls. In this course, students will be pushed to their limit as they prepare to raise Venture.

Learning highlights

  • The objective of the course is to prepare the students for a proper Demo Day where student-built startups will be presented in front of investors, mentors, and the student body.
  • Students will get presentation skills: ability to present the project to investors such as start-ups' accelerators, business angels, etc.
  • Students will get understanding of different types of investors and their approach to the evaluation of projects.
  • Modeling of financial and operational projections.
  • Step-be-step understanding of the fundraising process.

Prerequisites

Two weeks prior to the beginning of the course the students should send to vladgeneva@gmail.com the short presentations of their projects. The deck should include the proper explanation of the project, analysis of the target market/customers, description of the service/product, and a basic financial model. There should be an answer to the question, why this product/service will be demanded by the potential clients and why now.

The presentations made by ChatGPT and similar services will not be accepted.

If the deck in the above format is not provided two weeks before the course, the student is not allowed to take the course.

Methodology

The course will be split into two concurrent lines: interactive analysis and preparation of the presentations of the students’ projects and discussion of the best practices of presenting the projects to the venture investors.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
20% - Quality of initial preparation of the project
30% - Class participation (I.e. the ability to improve the project during the class and individual meetings)
50% - Final presentation
