Overview

Calculus is about the behaviour of certain variables under certain conditions. In very complex systems, different variables interact with each other, making it necessary to analyse multi-variable functions and partial differential equations. Furthermore, these functions and equations become complex to the point that we need computers to solve them for us, both symbolically and numerically.

Learning highlights

  • This course gives a broader understanding of calculus, including topics like continuous optimisation, multivariate calculus, differential equations, and some numerical algorithms. After the course, the student will be ready to apply the knowledge in fields like probability theory, physics simulation, and machine learning.

Prerequisites

Basic Python programming skills are recommended (loops, lists, and functions) because there will be some programming assignments.

Linear Algebra 1 is a plus.

Methodology

The course is very intense, but it will adapt to the flow of the students. It consists of theory and practice. In-class participation is highly encouraged.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
10% - In-class participation
15% - Midterm
25% - Final test
50% - Daily tasks
