Overview

This course is a business English course for business people. It consists of authentic topics of great interest to everyone involved in or studying international business. The course reflects the latest trends in the business world. If you are into business, the course will greatly improve your ability to communicate in English in a wide range of situations. If you are a student of business, the course will develop the communication skills you need to succeed in a professional environment and will broaden your knowledge of the business world. Everybody studying this course will become more fluent and confident in using the language of business in a variety of contexts.

Methodology

This course offers students a task-based, integrated skills approach to the development of core business skills. The course consists of instructor-led and small group discussions, pair work, role-play, individual and group work, with peer and instructor feedback.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
30% - Three progress tests
20% - Active participation in class
25% - Writing assignments
25% - Oral presentations

Adrianne Aiko Thompson

Professor of World Languages at Miami Dade College

Adrianne Aiko Thompson obtained a doctorate degree in curriculum and instruction, specializing in educational technology from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) from Columbia University, Teachers College, and bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and global studies from the University of Iowa.

She taught English in Japan for nearly nine years and is currently a professor at Miami Dade College, where she has taught English for academic purposes since 2002. She also teaches leadership courses in the Honors College and supports students on their transfer journeys to prestigious universities. Her academic interests include educational technology, linguistics & second language acquisition, classroom community, and Asian studies. She has led students in study abroad programs in Austria and Japan.
